Kid Bicycle helmets will be provided to children (ages 4-11) on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9am to 1pm at the front of Liberty Hill Junior High School, 13125 W Hwy 29. Any child can receive a bike helmet until the supply is exhausted.
The helmet give away is part of a statewide effort – Hard Hats for Little Heads – which was launched by the Texas Medical Association (TMA) in 1994. The program promotes fun exercise and teaches kids and parents about the importance of wearing a helmet. The event is sponsored locally by William Coleman, MD, in conjunction with Mission Liberty Hill Lutheran Church and the TMA.
On average, 250 children in the United States under the age of 14 die each year because of a bicycle crash. Another 300,000 children are treated in emergency rooms for severe head injuries, some left with permanent disabilities. Many of these injuries could have been avoided or reduced by using a helmet.
The Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP) provided funding for this project, which is sponsored locally by a TAFP member. TAFP’s support helps its members encourage health and safety in more communities across Texas through Hard Hats for Little Heads.

Texas physicians encourage wearing a properly fitted helmet for all sports on wheels – biking, skateboarding, inline skating and riding a scooter.

Since TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads began, physicians have given away more than 215,000 free helmets to Texas children. Hard Hats for Little Heads is made possible through a grant from TMA Foundation thanks to top donors – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, Prudential and two anonymous foundations – and generous gifts from physicians, their families and friends of medicine, and our local sponsor, Mission Liberty Hill Lutheran Church.
