Modric Cave is located in Rovanjska, a small village 30 minutes from Zadar in northern Dalmatia. The cave is completely preserved, without any man-made paths or electricity, and what makes it extra special is its proximity to the sea. Despite being only 95 feet above sea level, Modric Cave is a 'living' cave, where stalagmites and stalactites are still being formed.
When approaching the cave, your guide will unlock the entrance and let you inside - the only way to get through the opening is to sit in it and slide down. Modric Cave is 2,720 feet long and it will take a little over two hours to explore this fascinating underground world with the only light coming from your helmets. The stalagmites and stalactites have formed various shapes that will remind you of different everyday creatures, from jellyfish to queens.
Afterwards, head to the amazing Cenote Sac Actun, where you will be able to admire the underground world. With your guide, explore this place walking through its amazing halls and chambers while admiring different rock formations as stalactites, stalagmites and columns with several centuries of antiquity. Your guide will also lead you to discover the impressive vaults of these caverns.
The hike starts by following a path along the river’s edge, and progresses to scrambling across a rocky mountain gorge as you make your way further upstream. As you approach the cave’s majestic entrance you will enter into a pool of emerald blue water, and as you swim into the cave the darkness will eventually envelope you, prompting you to switch on your headlamp!
The cold crept in from the moment we stepped on the underground stream starting from the entrance of the cave. It was pitch black inside until we put on our head lamps and some solar-powered lamps and we were all dependent on its limited glimmers.
Climbing rocks with the rope, it was challenging for someone like me who has never done that before, and it was a bit scarier climbing down then climbing back up. There are so many type of rocks, some are sparkling, some are spiky, some look like human brains!
This adventure goes beyond the limits of what we know, taking us back to the Stone Age. There, your dreams and reality will be combined to lead you down to Fun-Fun Cave.
